From Kiwanis:

Greetings and Happy New Year from all from the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals!

We wanted to provide you with a few important updates as we continue to roll out our plans for the 2021 Solo and Small Ensemble Festival edition. The unpredictability of the pandemic restriction and the many technological considerations has made it more challenging for us to navigate; however, as one of BC’s oldest and largest music education festivals we remain committed to providing our students, teachers, and parents with the best festival experience we can!

We are extending registration and final submission deadlines to give students additional time to prepare for the Pre-recorded portion of the Solo and Small Ensemble Festivals.

We have updated the General Rules and Syllabi to incorporate plans for sharing the Pre-recorded performances with other class participants, parents, guardians, teachers, and community members.

Key Dates

  • Jan 4: Registration is open

  • Feb 15: Registration closes (repertoire selections are locked)

  • Mar 15: Submission deadline of final PDF music for all classes (one PDF file per selection, see FAQ for more details)

  • Mar 15: Submission deadline of final YouTube video link URL for Pre-recorded performance classes (one URL per class, see FAQ for more details, set as "unlisted videos" during YouTube upload process)

  • Apr 12-30: Solo and Small Ensemble Festivals (adjudication period for Pre-recorded performances and Virtual Studio classes)

A clarifying note that Virtual Studio classes are for Solo instrument classes at the Provincial Excellence and Open levels. Provincial Excellence classes are for participants who are aiming to compete at the Provincial Festival's Provincial Excellence class. Open level classes are for participants who have completed their Diploma or won the respective Diploma level class or are over a specific age (dependant upon the specific Solo instrument syllabus).

General Rules Revisions

The revised General Rules is attached to this newsletter. The revisions are highlighted in yellow.

All entrants/registrants are reminded to ensure accuracy of the registration information submitted including entries being in the correct classes.

Pre-recorded videos that are submitted to the registration platform will be viewed by adjudicators for the purpose of adjudicating performances. Video links will also be published/shared so that they can be viewed by other class participants, parents, guardians, teachers, and community members.

Health and Safety protocols for Virtual Studio classes may be revised based on any recommendations/requirements from the Provincial Health Office or Venues.

A reminder that effective August 2019, Performing Arts BC (the Provincial Festival) has withdrawn from the National Festival. As a result, VKMF will not be able to send any performers to the National Festival through the Provincial Festival. Please refer to the PABC syllabus and website for additional details.

Syllabi Revisions

The revised Solo and Small Ensemble Syllabi are attached to this newsletter. The revisions are highlighted in yellow.

Open Class eligibility has been clarified.

Open classes are designed for participants who have completed their Diploma or have previously won the respective Diploma level class or are over a specific age. See the Syllabi for the specific ages.
