Music Friends : Introducing the Burdeti Duo

  • University of British Columbia Canada (map)

About this Concert

Guitar and piano are two instruments that are not always the most compatible with one another, but yet this amazing husband and wife duo of guitarist Andrei Burdeti and pianist Jannie Burdeti, both alumni of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, are able to make it work.

You'll be delighted by the Spanish flavour in their program of original and arranged works for this ensemble, including their own transcriptions of the Ravel's Spanish-inspired Alborada del gracioso and Pavane pour une infant défunte, along with the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo, probably the most famous concerto written for the guitar. The evening will also feature music by Debussy, Enescu, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, as well as a traditional Chinese piece.

We hope you'll be able to join us for this delightfully unconventional evening of beautiful music!

Performers

Andrei Burdeti, guitar

Born in Suceava, Romania, Andrei Burdeti left at an early age with his family to relocate in Canada. His captivation with the classical guitar began at the age of 16 when he heard its sounds for the first time on recordings. From that moment on, he commenced formal musical studies in Montreal with Claude Reid at L’École de Musique Vincent D’Indy (DEC) and subsequently with Dr. Garry Antonio at the McGill Schulich School of Music. In 2010, he left Montreal to continue his training at the Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore where he studied with Ray Chester and Manuel Barrueco, earning his Doctor of Musical Arts in 2016. In addition, Dr. Burdeti received influential coachings from world-class guitarists such as Rémi Boucher, Olivier Chassain, William Kanengiser and Scott Tenant, to name a few. Dr. Burdeti performs regularly in solo concerts throughout North America and Europe. As a former member of the McGill Guitar Quartet, he has performed, directed, and written his own arrangements for the quartet. Since 2014, he also performs in his own guitar and piano ensemble known as the Burdeti Duo.

Jannie Burdeti, piano

Pianist Jannie Sing-Yen Burdeti made her New York debut at the age of 14, appearing in the Young Virtuosos Gala Concert in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Since then, she has performed as a soloist with orchestras and at festivals in the US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Holland, and Italy. Also an accomplished chamber musician, she has collaborated with luminaries such as Roberto Diaz, Norman Fischer, Paul Hersh, Axel Srauss, Joseph Swensen, and the Calder Quartet. In recent seasons, she has presented recitals in diverse halls such as the Ruïnekerk in Bergen, Holland, the Telekom Headquarters in Bonn, Germany, and the Steifel Theater in Salinas, Kansas. The Südkurier Newpaper called her playing “not only extraordinary technically, but delivered the composer’s intention masterfully.”
