VCGFest 2022: Ken Salomons - Luthiers Exhibition Spotlight

This series will spotlight the luthiers exhibiting at our July 17, 2022 VCFest event. Now we would like to turn the spotlight to Ken Salomons. His interest in guitar and luthiery began in his teenage years. Later he got his start apprenticing instrument repair with Mile Jones of Fretworks in Calgary, Alberta. Now he strives to build expressive instruments that are easy to play.

In addition to the guitar, he also builds ukulele’s and has collaborated with educator and performer Mustafa Kamaliddin to develop an impressive tenor ukulele build.

A word on the building process from Ken.

I build each instrument one at a time, allowing me to focus my attention on every detail. I begin each guitar by quantifying the physical characteristics of the raw materials I am working with. During construction, I practice resonance tuning of the top and back plates, as well as the assembled guitar. The data I collect, in tandem with my intuition honed from years of experience inform my process to create colourful and responsive instruments.
