Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival opens registration for 2015

VCGS invites classical guitar players of all ages and levels to take part in the annual Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver.

Registration deadline: January 24th

The guitar classes will be held on April 11th and 12th, 2015 at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church (375 W. 10th).
The adjudicator is Marc Teicholz, an internationally acclaimed performer and pedagogue.

GFA International Youth Competition 2014 Winner - Alan Liu from Vancouver

Congratulations to Alan Liu on winning first prize (junior division) at the GFA International Youth Competition 2014 in Fullerton, California! Alan’s father, Sewell Liu, VCGS members Galina Jitlina and Natasha Pashchenko and his fellow-guitarist Liel Amdour attended the convention and had the chance to enjoy Alan’s performance in the Youth Finals. Alan’s teacher, Daniel Bolshoy, was cheering for Alan from Vancouver.

Born in Xi’An, Chinain December of 2001, XuKun (Alan) Liu has been studying the guitar as well as the piano since the age of five. Some of Alan’s past guitar teachers include Pin Jin, Xia Yang, at the Baroque School of Music in Xi’An. Alan is currently studying with Daniel Bolshoy at the VSO School of music in Vancouver.

Still in his pre-teens, he has already amassed an impressive list of first prizes in music competitions, on both the guitar and the piano. 

Among his recent prizes are: first prize at the 2014 Guitare Montreal international youth competition, two consecutive first place prizes in the junior and intermediate guitar divisions at the 2013 and 2014 British Columbia Performing Arts festivals, the intermediate guitar division in the Kiwanis festival of Vancouver and the senior guitar division of the Richmond Music Festival. He has also won multiple gold medals as a pianist.

Alan has participated in numerous master classes and has won several scholarships to support his studies.
