Good guitars in the $800-1000 range?

Any opinions? For students who need a better guitar than an entry level one...does anyone have any recommendations?

IMO, for the models in this range, Manual Rodrigues, Takamine Hirade, and Asturias are good.
OR used guitar such as YAMAHA GC21, Jose Ramirez R1, etc.
